Meningitis Concerns

We are aware that there are concerns about meningitis following recent news reports. We would like to clarify that under NHS guidance, the Meningitis B vaccination is routinely offered only to babies under 2 years of age (since 2015) and to adults with asplenia or those who have had a splenectomy, or when a complement disorder is diagnosed, depending on age and vaccination history.

Teenagers are offered a school-based vaccination at age 14–15, which protects against meningitis ACWY (not Meningitis B). If a young person has missed their school vaccination, please contact the School Nursing Team to arrange this on hct.csaisherts@nhs.net or 0300 555 5055.

For those who are not eligible under the NHS, Meningitis B vaccinations can be accessed privately through some pharmacies or private clinics; this is typically a two-dose course costing around £220 in total.
